I’m in Melbourne for the day for work. On my way in I stopped to grab some coffee at a little stall. And I discovered a fascinating little system, using the trays in the picture below:

When you buy a coffee, they give you a card (like the 2 of diamonds shown). The card serves the usual function of identifying you when your coffee is ready. But afterwards you can place it in the rack. The business is not-for-profit (though I note an “owner” category there) and they will put the profits from your coffee to the purpose that you nominate. It’s a nice idea, though now I find myself wishing I’d found out what “environment” donations actually mean.
Update: I went back later too. Coffee is good but don’t be tempted to get the large. They have yummy muffins too.
Update2: I neglected to mention the name of the cafĂ©. It’s called Kurekure - I couldn’t find a website. As far as I know, they are currently just two mobile coffee carts on the University of Melbourne campus.

There is a coffee shop somewhere in Halifax where they do random “polls” each day using the tip jar. A question might be: “Better Jack?”, and one jar would say, “Nicholson”, while another might say, “Black.” People bid by tipping into the appropriate jar.
Hmmm interesting concept… might have to go looking for it when i am home again
